Shock Mount

Oops. Got a Jeep for a $1. Has a few “minor” rust issues. Driving home yesterday I noticed a clanging from the rear. Took a peak and found this:

Here’s the aftermath… read more below for the in between.

Well, that’s after I cleaned it up. Nasty rusty mess, shock not quite attached anymore.

First, need to get rid of the cancer…

So, I broke out the trusty old 3/8 sheet of diamond plate I have and made a new one.

Getting better on the welds…

And tacked in place…. I must say that at this point it was 10pm and I was toast, so I forgot the “after” picture. I’ll add that later…

You can see the hairline “crack” in the middle of the weld.. I’m working with a 120 volt mig and no gas, so penetration is an issue. One way around that is to weld it, grind it down, and take another pass. I’ve done this plenty of times and can come close to 60% penetration on 3/8 inch plate. When I’m welding plate to plate I make sure that I make a pass from both sides if at all possible. The frame isn’t nearly as thick as the patch so with the second pass I’m pretty safe.
